Historically, the name
usually refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society
founded on May 1, 1776. The society's goals were to oppose superstition, religious
influence over public life and abuses of state power. The Illuminati were
outlawed by the Bavarian ruler, Charles Theodore, with the encouragement of the
Roman Catholic Church, in 1784. In the several years following, the group was
defamed by conservative and religious critics who claimed that they continued
underground and were responsible for the French Revolution.
The eye in the middle of a pyramid on the American $1 bill is often pointed to as evidence of the Illuminati’s control over the U.S today. In actuality, the official name for this design is called the Eye of Providence. It has been used by multiple religions throughout history to reflect the protective, heightened powers of a god or gods. This can be accounted to date back to Ancient Egyptians as the Eye of Horus.
The reason behind the symbolism, from an American perspective, is that it is a reflection of God’s support for the United States. There are 13 levels on the pyramid, where the Eye of Providence is positioned. This was solely to show the freedom and overall unity of the country, while also displaying a potential to grow in the future.
The Freemasons, a fraternal organisations that trace their origins to the local fraternities of stonemason, are believed to be behind the powers of the U.S, instead of the Illuminati. This is because the Freemasons have a symbol, very similar to the Illuminati. The Freemasons, however, did not adopt the Eye of Providence as a symbol until 14 years after the US government.
