Area 51

Area 51 is a United States Air Force facility in Nevada. The base's current primary purpose (not publicly announced) is to supposedly test secret technology, such as military grade weapons and armors. Shortly after Kenneth Arnold coined the term "flying saucer" in 1947, there have been growing rumours that the US government, and others, have a number of crashed UFOs and alien bodies in their possession, and have been secretly reverse-engineering alien technology at locations such as Area 51.

After some absurd speculations the CIA finally came forward and did (publicly) admit that Area 51 exists, but they denied all claims of any alien-related activity. In reality, the spy agency offers no proof of alien spaceship landings in the desert or anywhere, much less have the spaceships themselves. This lead theorists to believe in a government cover-up, arguing why else would they require military personnel to guard the secret location.

Instead of encounters with flying saucers, the documents released by the Central Intelligence Agency recount a less sensational history of Area 51 as a testing range for the government's U-2 spy plane during the Cold War. So the secrecy was not about Martians but about hiding a new spy plane from the Soviets. The U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was designed to snoop on the Soviet Union at high-altitude, hence its development was top-secret.

James Noce, an Area 51 worker in the early 1960’s, revealed he was sworn to secrecy about his work for 47 years. After his contract was over he was free to talk about his work, and shed some light for the curious people. Noce disclosed he was a guard and worked as security, doing routine things like checking for clearance and making sure no one had weapons. He also shared that the Air Force and "the agency" didn't mind the stories about alien spacecraft because they helped cover up the secret planes that were being tested.
